Sun, sand, salt water, and chlorine
Summer brings emotions but can leave a mark on your jewelry.
It's normal to notice that silver has lost its shine, gold is less shiny, or gems look dull. But don't worry: with a few gestures you can bring your precious items back to their original luster.
🌊 Sun, sea, and pool: what happens to your jewelry?
- Silver: can oxidize when in contact with saltwater or chlorine, but it is a natural and reversible phenomenon.
- Gold: more durable, but sunscreen and sand can dull its shine.
- Gems: be careful of thermal shocks and aggressive cleaners that can compromise their integrity.
Gentle DIY cleaning
1️⃣ Mix hot water with a neutral soap or add a pinch of baking soda, making sure it is well dissolved.
2️⃣ Immerse the jewelry
Soak the jewelry for about 20 minutes to dissolve residues of sand, salt, and sunscreen products.
3️⃣ Brush gently
Use a soft-bristle brush (even a children's toothbrush is fine) to clean the more intricate areas without scratching the surface.
4️⃣ Rinse and dry
Rinse with clean water and dry with a soft cloth to prevent signs of oxidation and make the metal shine.
5️⃣ Extra tip
For a professional shine, use a specific cloth for silver or gold. Avoid harsh chemicals that could damage the metal or gems.
